Titanic Cake Update!

Further to my previous post, here is the Titanic Cake so far!;

I’ve covered the sponge in marzipan, moulded the two half’s together, sculptured the two ends in to a boat shape, and covered it with icing. It may sound simple here, but I have to say it wasn’t all plain-sailing! I’d never covered a cake with marzipan or icing before, and the marzipan especially, well, lets just say, it’s a good job the icing has covered it!!

Still, although it would never win “best in show”, as a first attempt, I’m quite pleased so far! It’s not a crumbled mess yet – which is encouraging!! Mia sampled the bits that I’d cut away to make the boat shape, and said it was yummy!

Next I need to marzipan and ice the top layers of the cake (already made) and place them on to the base of the ship. I will then be painting with food colouring, adding the funnels and making the lifeboats from icing. The ship will be placed on a “sea” of blue icing, tiny people will be rowing out on the lifeboats, birthday candles will burn from the funnels and I will be making the “Heart of the Ocean” necklace (from the James Cameron film) from blue icing and the diamante chain from edible silver balls. This will be placed at the foot of the cake board with Mia’s name upon it.

All this needs to be completely finished for our little family party with parents’ and parents-in-law on Friday evening!! When I read that back I think, as Kirstie Allsop would say, “I don’t have a snowball’s chance in Hell”…or perhaps that should read “ice-burg” !

Will keep you posted!!

  4. Just read your comment on my blog. It's a beautiful place at the Lickeys when the bluebells are out and how amazing you know about it, small world hey. We've got more rain forecast and on the days which are supposed to be nice my hubby will be working, as he works weekends and it's mainly for him I want to go...well, me aswell, but he's never been to the Lickeys when the Blubells are out. Oh well, we'll see, possibly next week. Good luck with cake. x
